Tasting Notes
Petit Verdot has a predilection for producing really bruising, dour wines that don't offer much in the way of fruit expression, especially on the nose. They're often blocky and monolithic and end up mostly just smelling kind of nondescriptly... "dark." It is a treat to encounter an example with some real lift and fruit and florality. Loads of black raspberry and kirsch, with fresh violet and iris emerging gradually with air. I also pick up a healthy measure of graphite, one of the more classic signatures of the variety when grown in the Monticello AVA. But this is wonderfully fine-grained and approachable.
Food Pairing
Lighter cuts of red meat and yet still approachable with burgers on the grill, even homemade pizza.
